Getting Inspired

Posted by – October 11, 2010

I’ve been continuing to work on the cover and inside illustrations for my cookbook The Kitchen and The Garden Patch

Here’s what’s been inspiring me lately. A little bit of deco, a little arts and crafts. Everything reminiscent of nature and all its beauty. Stylized but simplified floral illustrations and thin outlines, and big blocks of color. Everything from William Morris to Paul Poiret, from George Brandt to Felix Albrecht. And some more below:

I will keep you updated

Yesterday, I hosted a Vegan Day at Sober College.

Posted by – September 30, 2010

Since the whole premise of my cook book The Kitchen and The Garden Patch is centered around becoming self-sufficient and improving your health by the means of a pure vegetarian (vegan) diet, the founder of Sober College thought it would be a great idea to host a Vegan Day for all of the staff and students.

Being in recovery from drug and alcohol addiction means starting a new lifestyle of cleansing the body and working towards health. While many of the students and staff have already started on a path to Vegetarianism/Veganism, there are some that are looking for a little help.

With the help of the wonderful staff, we prepared recipes from The Kitchen and The Garden Patch for lunch. It felt like a big family. The spread was so colorful, and everyone appreciated a nice home cooked meal.

The Creative Department at Sober College is also putting together a video and photos of Vegan Day. I can’t wait to see them. There’s some interviews, footage of preparing the food, and everyone enjoying it afterwards. Once I get pictures and video, I’ll be sure to post them here and on the book’s site too (www.thekitchenandthegardenpatch.com).

I’m a type nerd.

Posted by – September 9, 2010

Well, well, well. It’s finally time to put all of my hard efforts to good use. Months of cooking, perfecting, and compiling all of my recipes for my cookbook (The Kitchen and The Garden Patch).

This is the part I love just as much as cooking: designing. I’ve become immersed in completely in InDesign. Character/Object/Paragraph Styles (something I never much used before) are coming in handy.

And I’m loving working with Metallophile SP8. It’s gorgeous, AND it has fractions.

Ok, so I’m a bit of a type nerd.  (But I secretly hope you are just as excited as I am.)

More news to come soon.

Current CookBook Inspirations

Posted by – April 6, 2010

Although I’ve been loving the 1920’s lately (in terms of hair, fashion and music), as far as cookbook art inspirations go, I’m enjoying a nice combo of art nouveau, art deco & the arts and crafts movement.

Trying to find nice colors and a font that is functional, yet matches the style and time period I’m going for.

All of those movements were so close to the 1920’s/30’s, so I’m tempted to use Metallophile because it is basically a distressed version of Futura. But I might end up going the arts and crafts route and using p22 morris golden

Still thinking about type

Posted by – March 30, 2010

There’s a lot of really beautiful typefaces on Font Shop that have a very subtle distressing to them, to make the type look like it was printed the old-fashioned way. I want to use one of these in The Kitchen and The Garden Patch.

Inspired by William Morris, the designer/artist best known for his work in the Arts and Crafts movement, this typeface (P22 Morris Golden) is one of my top choices for now.

I’m also still leaning towards using Metallophile SP8 (see it here).
