Merry Christmas vs. Happy Holidays?

Posted by – December 11, 2009

This has been on my mind.
When this time of the year rolls around, especially in my job as a designer, there is a real push from clients to stay away from any Christmas references and stick with the more politically correct “Happy Holidays.”

Maybe I’m old fashioned, but I prefer Merry Christmas. When “Happy Holidays” is forced upon us, it feels so bland and vague, rather than an its intent of encompassing all of the holidays into one feel good phrase that doesn’t leave anyone out. Will it get to the point where the older generations die off and no one says Merry Christmas anymore?

I agree that it’s important to not leave anyone out. Personally, over the past few years I’ve taken the time to study some of them to see what they’re all about; Christianity, Judaism, Buddhism, Hinduism, Taoism, Islam, Native Spirituality, and Norse Religions to name a few.
My point is that I respect and agree with a lot of things that those religions are all about; I am a firm believer that people should celebrate what they believe in. This year, I will be saying Merry Christmas, but also welcoming any holiday wishes from other folks.

So, what do you guys think? Merry Christmas or Happy Holidays? OR any variations?

ALSO, one more thing. My friend Ryan over at Metacom Creative wrote an article entitled: A New Way To Look At Thanksgiving which I thought was refreshing and insightful. You’ll like it.
